Micro-penis-conditionYou might have heard the term ‘micropenis’ many times and must be wondering what exactly it is.

Many men seek ways for enlarging their penis. In this article, you are going to learn all of basics about this condition. All research and facts that are mentioned in the article are verified.

So what exactly is micropenis?

Basically it is a term that describes a penis that is abnormally small. Any male adult who is having an erect penis of 3.5 inches or less must be evaluated for this condition. In male newborns if the stretched penile length is 2.0 or lesser than that, he must be evaluated for micropenis. There is an estimation that 1 out of every 200 people suffer from this condition.
Various factors such as ethnicity and age are considered, before penis is categorized as micropenis. It is important to consider the factor of ethnicity because, the diameter and penile length in children of Chinese origin is smaller than that of East-Indian and Caucasian origins.

In this condition, the appearance of penis is very normal and usually no malformations are seen such as crytorchidism, epispadias or hypospadias. However, this condition isn’t similar to that of ‘hidden penis’ which is usually a normal sized penis but has excessive supra- pubic fat.

How and when is micropenis diagnosed?

One can diagnose this condition at any age. All that is needed is a quick examination by a physician or a doctor. Even self-diagnosis can be performed by an individual, providing the fact that he knows how his penis must be measured properly. For diagnosing the condition, other examinations might also be required

What are the causes of Micropenis?

As of now, the exact causes that lead to micro penis are not known. However, it is known that the condition results from several abnormalities of the hormones that are seen during the 3rd and the 2nd trimester of pregnancy.

• In majority of cases, say over 50 percent cases, the condition comes along with hypogonadotropic hypogonadism, in which the hypothalamus fails to produce adequate amount of GnRH or Gonadotropin releasing hormone. 15 percent of patients report end organ hormonal insensitivity while 25 percent report hypergonadotrophic hypogonadism.

• There is also a possibility of micro penis being a part of other genetic malformation syndromes that don’t have any relation to sex chromosomes. For instance, it might be a sign of congenital hypopituitarism.

• The size of the penis can be affected by several homeobox genes, without any detectable abnormalities of the hormones.

• Over exposure to DES, an estrogen based fertility drug has a link to various abnormalities including this condition.
Finally, as per a study it was shown that uncontrolled use of domestic pesticide increases likelihood of newborns with genital malformations and micropenis.
